Heroes' Day (Hari Pahlawan) is observed in Indonesia every November 10, commemorating the 1945 Battle of Surabaya during the Indonesian National Revolution. This battle marked a significant moment in Indonesia's struggle for independence from the Netherlands, as it galvanized international support for their cause. The conflict began on October 27, 1945, when British troops entered Surabaya, leading to a fierce battle that symbolized Indonesian resistance despite the eventual conquest of the city. On this day, Indonesians honor those who have been posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Indonesia, the highest honor for heroic actions, with a traditional awarding ceremony. As of 2013, 147 men and 12 women have received this title, including independence activists and soldiers.
