World Keratoconus Day is observed worldwide every November 10, having been established in 2016 by the National Keratoconus Foundation, which is part of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at the University of California, Irvine. This day aims to increase awareness of keratoconus, a degenerative disorder of the cornea affecting approximately 50 to 200 individuals per 100,000, regardless of ethnicity. Events organized on this day include open lectures, educational seminars, free screenings, and consultations, involving healthcare organizations, ophthalmologists, researchers, and individuals affected by keratoconus. The disorder can lead to significant visual impairment and is diagnosed through corneal topography, with treatment options ranging from glasses and contact lenses to surgical interventions like corneal transplantation.
