Saint Martin's Day, also known as the Feast of Saint Martin, is observed worldwide on November 11. The holiday commemorates Saint Martin of Tours, a former Roman soldier who became a monk and is recognized as the patron of the poor and friend of children. Originating in France, the celebration coincides with the end of the agrarian year, making it a harvest festival marked by fairs and feasting. A notable custom is the consumption of goose, and in wine-producing regions, it is a time to taste newly produced wine. Saint Martin's Day is widely celebrated in countries including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, although it is not a public holiday in these places due to its overlap with Armistice Day. It is, however, a national holiday in Sint Maarten and an official holiday in Burgenland, Austria.
