November 14: Day of the Colombian Woman (Colombia)

The Day of the Colombian Woman is observed in Colombia every November 14 to commemorate the death anniversary of Policarpa Salavarrieta, a heroine of Colombian independence. Established by the Congress of the Republic of Colombia in 1967, this observance recognizes Policarpa's significant contributions as a seamstress and spy for the Revolutionary Forces during the Spanish Reconquista of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. Infiltrating royalist homes in Bogotá, she gathered intelligence and recruited young men for the cause. Policarpa was captured and executed by firing squad on November 14, 1817, at Bolívar Square in Bogotá. The holiday serves to honor her legacy and the contributions of all Colombian women to the nation's development.
