November 15: Schichi-Go-San (Japan)

Schichi-Go-San is a traditional festival observed in Japan every November 15, celebrating the growth of children, particularly those at the ages of 3, 5, and 7. This festival is not a public holiday, so it is often celebrated on the nearest weekend. It marks significant milestones in a child's life, with odd ages considered lucky in Japanese culture. During Schichi-Go-San, children wear kimonos for the first time, with boys aged 5 wearing hakama and girls aged 7 replacing simple cords with traditional obi to tie their kimonos. A notable custom includes allowing children to grow their hair after having it shaved until the age of three, although this practice is less common today. Families visit shrines to pray for their children's health and happiness, and children receive special treats called Chitose Ame, which are thin red and white candies symbolizing growth and longevity. The day is also popular for taking photographs of the children in their festive attire.
