St. Leopold's Day is observed in Austria, particularly in Vienna and Lower Austria, every November 15. This public holiday commemorates St. Leopold III, the Margrave of Austria from 1095 until his death in 1136, who was canonized in 1485 and declared the patron saint of Austria in 1663. The day honors his contributions to the establishment of monasteries and the development of cities such as Vienna, Krems an der Donau, and Klosterneuburg, where he is buried. A notable tradition associated with St. Leopold's Day is Fasselrutschen, or “the slide of the great cask,” which takes place in the wine cellar of the abbey where he was interred. Participants ascend a staircase to slide down the side of a large cask, with the belief that a faster descent brings good luck for the coming year.
