National Tree Planting Day is observed in Sri Lanka every November 15. This day marks the launch of the Dayata Sevana National Tree Planting Program, which aims to address the serious issue of deforestation in the country. Sri Lanka, known for its vast tropical forests and rich biodiversity, has 27% of its flowering plants as endemic species. The observance was initiated in 2010 to commemorate the birthday of the 6th President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, and his inauguration anniversary. On this day, numerous tree planting ceremonies are organized across the nation, involving various ministries dedicated to environmental protection, such as the Ministry of Wildlife Resources Conservation and the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment. Special emphasis is placed on the participation of the school community during these events.
