Remembrance Day of the Sacrifice of Vukovar in 1991 is observed in Croatia every November 18. This day commemorates the end of the 87-day siege of Vukovar during the Croatian War of Independence, which concluded on November 18, 1991. The citizens of Vukovar displayed immense bravery in resisting the Yugoslav People's Army, supported by Serbia, despite being outnumbered. The battle resulted in significant casualties, with several thousand Serbs and around a thousand Croats losing their lives. Although Vukovar fell, the battle fostered a surge of patriotism among Croats, ultimately contributing to their victory in the war. Since 1999, this memorial day has been recognized by the Croatian parliament, and it serves as a symbol of Croatian identity and national freedom, with fallen soldiers honored with dignity.
