Black Awareness Day, or Dia da Conciência Negra, is observed in Brazil every November 20. Established in the 1960s, the holiday celebrates the contributions of the black community to the country and aims to promote equal rights regardless of skin color or ethnic identity. The date was chosen to commemorate the death anniversary of Zumbi, the last leader of the Palmares community of escaped slaves. Historically, Black Awareness Day was celebrated on May 13, the date of Brazil's abolition of slavery, but was later moved to November 20 to better honor Zumbi's legacy. The holiday reflects a growing recognition and redemption of Black identity in Brazil, where Afro-Brazilians make up 7.61% of the population, according to the 2010 census.
