November 20: Global Organized Hug a Runner Day

Global Organized Hug a Runner Day (G.O.H.A.R.D.), also known as International Hug a Runner Day, is observed worldwide every November 20. This annual event was initiated by collegiate runner Tim Catalano and Olympian Adam Goucher, inspired by a Facebook page promoting hugs among cross-country runners. The day aims to recognize runners and foster unity within the running and walking community through the simple act of hugging, which symbolizes celebration and support. To celebrate, participants are encouraged to hug their favorite runners, organize charity races, and engage in acts of kindness, such as volunteering or donating to charities. Additionally, Run the Edge hosts the “Hug a Runner 5K for $5K Challenge” from November 11 to November 20, where participants run or walk a minimum of 5 km daily for ten days, with proceeds benefiting a featured charity. The event has grown in popularity since its inception in 2011, promoting positivity and community spirit among runners.
