National Day in Tonga is observed every November 4 and commemorates the enactment of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Tonga in 1875. This day was previously known as Tonga Constitution Day until it was renamed in 2006 to celebrate the country's heritage as a whole. Tonga, a small Polynesian state, is notable for never having lost its sovereignty to a foreign power, making the adoption of its constitution a significant event. The kingdom was unified in 1845 by Tāufaʻāhau, later known as George Tupou I, who became the first king upon the constitution's enactment.
