Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day or Bonfire Night, is observed worldwide, particularly in Great Britain and some former British colonies, every November 5. This commemoration celebrates the arrest of Guy Fawkes, who was involved in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, where a group of English Catholics attempted to assassinate King James I by blowing up the House of Lords. Following the plot's failure, the citizens lit bonfires to celebrate the king's survival, leading to the English Parliament passing the Observance of 5th November Act in 1606, which mandated a public day of thanksgiving. Although this law was repealed in 1859, the tradition of celebrating Guy Fawkes Night continued informally. Modern festivities typically include bonfires and fireworks, often held with controlled access and paid admission to prevent accidents. Over time, the event has shifted away from its original anti-Catholic sentiment, focusing instead on community celebrations.
