Puno Day is observed in the city of Puno, Peru, every November 5. This holiday commemorates the founding of Puno by Spanish conquistadors and the establishment of the Inca Empire, which was centered around Lake Titicaca. Puno was founded on November 4, 1668, by Viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro, while the Inca Empire, believed to be founded by Manco Cápac, was the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. Celebrations begin in the first week of November and culminate on Puno Day with various parades, musical and dance performances, fairs, and other events held at the city stadium and main square. A notable highlight of the festivities is the reenactment of the legend surrounding the creation of the Inca Empire.
