Finnish Swedish Heritage Day is observed in Finland every November 6, honoring the culture of the Swedish-speaking population and the country's bilingualism. The day was established in 1908 by the Swedish People's Party of Finland, with the date chosen to coincide with Gustavus Adolphus Day, marking the anniversary of the Swedish king's death, which signified the beginning of the Swedish Empire. Celebrations focus on strengthening the Swedish-speaking Finnish community and recognizing both language groups as integral parts of Finland. Activities typically include school events and radio broadcasts. Although it is not an official flag day, the Finnish flag and the flag of the Swedish-speaking Finns, a red banner with a yellow cross, are displayed. Currently, Swedish is the native language of about 5% of Finland's population.
