The Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repressions is observed in Kyrgyzstan every November 8. This remembrance day was established in 2008 by the country's parliament to honor those executed during Stalin's Great Purge in the 1930s. The Great Purge led to the imprisonment and execution of tens of thousands of citizens, including notable figures such as Torokul Aitmatov, the father of renowned author Chyngyz Aitmatov. On this day, remembrance ceremonies are held at the Ata-Beyit Memorial Complex, which was built at the site where 137 bodies were discovered in 1991, having been executed by the Soviet secret police, NKVD, in November 1938. The ceremonies aim to commemorate all victims of political repression in Kyrgyzstan.
