November 8: Journalists’ Day (China)

Journalists' Day is observed in the People's Republic of China every November 8. This holiday was officially inaugurated by the Chinese government in 1999, with the first celebration taking place in 2000. Its origins trace back to 1934, initially celebrated on September 1 to honor a reporter who faced prosecution for an investigative report criticizing local government. The date was later changed to November 8 to commemorate the founding of the China Young Journalist Association in 1937. On this day, Chinese journalists receive congratulations from their superiors and government officials, although it remains a working holiday with no day off for media employees. Observers have noted that the establishment of this holiday may be seen as hypocritical, given the heavy government monitoring of the media in China, which consistently ranks poorly in the Press Freedom Index.
