Education Day is a national holiday observed in Kiribati on October 10. This day celebrates the education system within the country, which has evolved significantly since 1965 when the islands were part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony. Prior to this, education was primarily conducted by the church, and the establishment of a unified education system began in 1965. Compulsory primary education was introduced in 1970, initially covering six years and now extended to nine years, with the government gradually integrating mission schools into the public school system. The Kiribati government places a strong emphasis on expanding higher education opportunities, allowing students to pursue diplomas in various fields locally or study abroad for medical and environmental education.
