October 10: Heroes’ Day (South Africa)

Heroes’ Day is observed in Orania, a South African city established by Afrikaners, every October 10. This holiday commemorates the birth anniversary of Paul Kruger, the third president of the South African Republic, who was born on October 10, 1825. The day celebrates Kruger’s contributions and honors those who died in the Boer Wars. The holiday has its roots in Kruger Day, first celebrated by the Boers in 1882, and was officially recognized as a public holiday in South Africa the following year. Although it was discontinued in 1902 after the Second Boer War, it was reintroduced in 1952 as Heroes’ Day by the National Party. Following the end of apartheid in 1994, the holiday was abolished by the African National Congress but continues to be celebrated in Orania, where residents observe their own set of national holidays. In addition to Heroes’ Day, Oranians also celebrate Majuba Day, Founders Day, Bitter Enders’ Day, Afrikaner Language Day, and the Day of the Vow.
