Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day is observed worldwide every October 13 to highlight the dangers of metastatic breast cancer (MBC) and support patients with stage IV breast cancer. This day was established following a demonstration by MBC patients and their families in Washington, D.C., which led to the U.S. Congress passing a resolution in 2009 to designate this date for awareness. MBC refers to breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, and it is considered incurable in most cases, with a ten-year survival rate of only 10% with optimal treatment. On this day, people are encouraged to wear awareness ribbons—pink for general breast cancer awareness and a combination of pink, teal, and green for metastatic breast cancer. Activities include donating to organizations that fund MBC research, participating in local events, and promoting awareness on social media. Additionally, it serves as a reminder for individuals to perform monthly self-exams, as early detection can prevent the cancer from spreading.
