Chișinău Day is observed in the Moldovan capital, Chișinău, every October 14. This official municipal holiday honors the city's oldest church, the Măzărache Church, which was founded in 1752, and coincides with the Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic feast of the Intercession of the Theotokos. The celebration, which was moved to this date in 2002, typically features an open-air festival on Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard, which is closed to traffic for the occasion. Festivities include folk music and dance, a marketplace showcasing handmade artisan items, traditional food, and Moldovan wines. The day culminates in a large concert and a fireworks display at the Great National Assembly Square. Unlike many other cities in former Soviet Republics, Chișinău Day does not commemorate the city's foundation or liberation during WWII, but rather focuses on its cultural and religious heritage.
