National Education Day is observed in Poland every October 14. This holiday commemorates the establishment of the Commission of National Education in 1773, which was the first Ministry of Education in Europe, created by King Stanisław II August and the Sejm. The Commission significantly transformed the educational system in Poland by making education more accessible, opening new schools, and training thousands of teachers, while also introducing new school programs and textbooks influenced by Enlightenment ideas. Originally known as Teacher's Day, the holiday has since been renamed National Education Day but continues to serve as a professional holiday for Polish teachers and school employees. On this day, special events are organized at schools, where children often express their gratitude to teachers.
