October 14: Liberation Day (Yemen)

Liberation Day is observed in Yemen every October 14, commemorating the revolts against British control in South Yemen that ultimately led to its independence. The territory became a British protectorate in 1869, while North Yemen was part of the Ottoman Empire. Following the rise of Arab nationalism in the 1960s, nationalist groups initiated an armed struggle on October 14, 1963, known as the Aden Emergency, which lasted four years. South Yemen gained independence on November 30, 1967, becoming the People's Republic of South Yemen. When North and South Yemen unified, October 14 was designated as a public holiday. The day is marked with official speeches, rallies, and parades throughout the country, celebrating the historical significance of the struggle for independence.
