Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day (PAILRD) is observed in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, and some states in Australia every October 15. The day focuses on raising public awareness about pregnancy loss and infant death, including miscarriage, stillbirth, sudden infant death syndrome, and the death of a newborn. Remembrance ceremonies and candlelight vigils are held in many cities, with participants lighting candles at 7:00 p.m. in their respective time zones for at least one hour. The observance was first recognized in 2002 by 20 states, and since 2006, it has been proclaimed annually by all 50 states, with eight states adopting a permanent proclamation. The Canadian PAILRD Campaign began in 2004, and Australia joined in 2008.
