October 15: Shwmae Sumae Day (United Kingdom)

Shwmae Sumae Day, observed in Wales every October 15, is an annual celebration aimed at promoting the Welsh language and encouraging non-Welsh speakers to learn basic words and expressions. The day originated in 2013 and is named after two informal Welsh greetings, "shwmae" and "sumae," which serve as conversation starters. Coordinated by Dathlu’r Gymraeg, a network dedicated to the Welsh language, the event invites individuals and organizations to organize activities that support Welsh culture. Schools and educational institutions participate by creating videos to promote Welsh, while various businesses and NGOs also support the initiative through special events, workshops, and promotions. Each year, five "champions" are appointed to share their experiences with the language, encouraging others to engage with Welsh, regardless of their proficiency level.
