Bu-Ma Democratic Protests Commemoration Day is observed in South Korea every October 16 to honor the 1979 Busan-Masan Uprising, which was suppressed by the dictatorial regime of President Park Chung Hee. This uprising began as student protests in Busan, sparked by the expulsion of opposition leader Kim Young-sam from the National Assembly. The demonstrations quickly escalated, leading to clashes with police and the declaration of martial law. Despite the suppression of the protests, they marked a significant turning point against the Yushin Regime, which ultimately ended with Park's assassination in 1979. In 2019, the South Korean government designated this day as a national memorial day, and it is marked by remembrance ceremonies, exhibitions, and activities throughout the country to honor those who fought for democracy.
