October 16: Restart a Heart Day

World Restart a Heart Day is observed worldwide every October 16, aiming to highlight the importance of bystander CPR and encourage individuals to learn this life-saving skill. The initiative was initiated by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) with support from the European Parliament, following the declaration of European Cardiac Arrest Awareness Week in 2012. Each year, ERC member states organize free workshops where participants can learn to perform CPR and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs). This observance is crucial as statistics show that approximately 400,000 people in Europe experience out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrests annually, with over 90% resulting in death; however, timely CPR can significantly increase survival chances. The campaign receives support from various healthcare organizations, including the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
