Teachers' Day is observed in Chile every October 16, celebrating the contributions of educators across the country. The holiday has a complex history; it was originally established on September 11, 1967, as Día del Maestro but was renamed Día del Profesor in 1975 and moved to December 10 to honor Gabriela Mistral, the first Latin American educator to receive a Nobel Prize. In 1977, the date was changed to October 16 to commemorate the founding of the Teachers' College in Chile. Despite this, many teachers advocate for a return to the original date, citing its imposition during a military dictatorship. On this day, students and their parents express their appreciation for teachers by sending cards and gifts, acknowledging their important role in education.
