National Prayer Day, also known as the National Day of Prayer, Fasting, Repentance, and Reconciliation, is observed in Zambia every October 18. This public holiday was inaugurated in 2015 by President Edgar Lungu in response to significant economic challenges, including a 45% decline of the Zambian kwacha against the U.S. dollar and power shortages due to low water levels in Lake Kariba. The day aims to unite Zambians in prayer and promote reconciliation and healing during times of hardship. On this day, all pubs, bars, restaurants, and other public places are closed to encourage fasting and prayer. A notable gathering typically occurs at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, where large prayer assemblies take place. However, the holiday has sparked controversy, with critics suggesting it was created to distract the public from ongoing economic issues.
