Arbor Day is observed in the Czech Republic every October 20. This celebration, which encourages tree planting, has its roots in the USA and was first celebrated in the Czech Republic in April 1906. However, its observance was interrupted by the World Wars and later suppressed by the Communist regime. The modern celebration was revived in 2000, thanks to efforts by Václav Twig, the former director of the botanical garden of Charles University, and gardener Martin Patřičný, who selected October 20 for its aesthetic appeal, as it is a time when trees are particularly beautiful. Despite being a relatively recent observance, Arbor Day has gained popularity and promotes ecological awareness in the country.
