October 20: Breast Cancer Awareness Day

Breast Cancer Awareness Day is observed in Ukraine every October 20. It was inaugurated by President Leonid Kuchma in 2005 to promote awareness of breast cancer and to facilitate the development of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and research in the country. The day is marked by various events aimed at educating women about breast cancer, including free checkups, consultations, open lectures, and fundraisers. According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, approximately 15,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, with women aged 60 and older being the primary risk group. The importance of self-examination and regular checkups is emphasized, as early diagnosis significantly improves survival rates.
