October 20: CRISPR Day

World CRISPR Day is observed worldwide every October 20 to celebrate the groundbreaking genome engineering technology known as CRISPR, which won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020. The day was launched by Synthego, a genome engineering company, with the aim of explaining the complex technology in simple terms and uniting the genome engineering community. The term CRISPR stands for “clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats,” which are DNA sequences found in many bacteria and archaea that provide immunity against viruses. The CRISPR-Cas9 technique, developed by Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier, allows for precise editing of DNA and has potential applications in treating various diseases, improving agriculture, and eliminating invasive species. Events such as conferences, seminars, and symposiums are held to discuss the latest developments in CRISPR research, and participants are encouraged to share information on social media using the hashtag #WorldCRISPRDay.
