Heroes' Day, also known as Mashujaa Day, is observed in Kenya every October 20. This national holiday commemorates the heroes of the nation who fought for Kenya's independence, particularly those associated with the Mau Mau movement, which began in 1948. The movement staged an uprising on October 20, 1952, leading to a state of emergency that lasted until 1960. Following Kenya's independence in 1963, the leaders of the Mau Mau became recognized as national heroes. The holiday was previously known as Kenyatta Day, honoring the late President Jomo Kenyatta, until it was renamed in 2010 following constitutional changes. On this day, Kenyans remember and celebrate the sacrifices made by these heroes for the country's freedom.
