Purple Friday (Paarse Vrijdag) is observed in the Netherlands every second Friday of December, where students in Dutch schools wear purple to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and combat bullying. The event was inspired by Spirit Day in the United States and was initiated in 2010 by Dutch high school student Nazmul Zaman, with support from COC Nederland, the oldest LGBTQ+ organization in the world. Since its inception, Purple Friday has grown to include participation from hundreds of schools across the country, including primary schools, secondary vocational schools, and universities. Schools often publish the annual Purple Friday Newspaper with educational content about sexual and gender diversity and organize events to promote tolerance. COC Nederland provides resources such as posters, educational podcasts, and lesson plans to help create a safer and more inclusive environment for students.
