International Sloth Day is observed worldwide every October 20 to highlight the conservation needs of sloths, which are primarily found in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Established in 2010 by AIUNAU, a Colombian non-profit animal welfare foundation, the day aims to draw attention to the plight of sloths, including issues such as poaching and habitat destruction. Events and activities organized by animal welfare organizations focus on educating the public about the importance of sloths and the challenges they face, particularly the critically endangered pygmy three-toed sloth and the vulnerable maned three-toed sloth. Participants often engage in activities that emphasize the need for habitat preservation and the rehabilitation of injured or mistreated sloths. Sloths are known for their slow metabolism and deliberate movements, spending most of their time hanging upside down in trees, where they eat, sleep, and give birth.
