National Reptile Awareness Day is observed worldwide every October 21. This day was created to highlight the importance of reptiles in ecosystems and to promote conservation efforts for these animals. Reptiles, which include crocodilians, tuataras, snakes, lizards, and turtles, play vital roles in their habitats, acting as both predators and prey, and helping control agricultural pests. Unfortunately, many reptile species face significant threats, with 196 species critically endangered and 328 endangered as of 2016. The origins of this observance are unclear, but it has been supported by Reptiles magazine and various conservation organizations. Celebrations may include visiting local zoos or aquariums, sponsoring reptiles at shelters, donating to wildlife organizations, and sharing pet reptile photos on social media using specific hashtags.
