This day commemorates the significant loss of life, with estimates of 300,000 to 500,000 ethnic Serbs who fell victim to genocide during the conflict. A notable event associated with this remembrance is the Kragujevac massacre, where over 2,700 civilians were killed in retaliation for the deaths of German soldiers. Ceremonies are held throughout the country, with the main event taking place at Šumarice Memorial Park near Kragujevac. Although it is a solemn occasion, it is not a non-working holiday.
