The International Day of the Snow Leopard, also known as International Snow Leopard Day, is observed worldwide every October 23. This day is dedicated to the conservation of the snow leopard (Panthera uncia), one of the rarest wild cats, which inhabits the alpine and subalpine zones of Central and South Asia. The day was initiated by countries within the snow leopard's range, including Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, and others, following the signing of the Bishkek Declaration on snow leopard conservation in 2013. The first celebration took place in 2014, and it was officially recognized as a United Nations international day in 2024. The main goals of the observance include consolidating conservation efforts, emphasizing the prevention of poaching, and addressing the threats posed by habitat loss, climate change, and human conflict. The snow leopard is listed as a vulnerable species, with an estimated population of 4,000 to 8,000 individuals, facing severe threats from illegal trade and poaching.
