MDS World Awareness Day is observed worldwide every October 25 to highlight myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a group of rare blood cancers affecting immature blood cells in the bone marrow. Established by the MDS Alliance in 2016, the day aims to educate people about MDS, its signs, symptoms, prognosis, and treatment options, while also supporting patients and caregivers. Events organized by MDS patient support groups, healthcare organizations, and other stakeholders include concerts, charity walks, social media campaigns, and flashmobs to promote understanding of the disease and raise funds for research. MDS is characterized by abnormal blood-forming cells that can lead to reduced blood cell counts and may progress to acute myeloid leukemia. The day encourages individuals to learn more about MDS, donate to support organizations, and engage in discussions on social media using the hashtag #WorldMDSAwarenessDay.
