October 25: Military Chaplain Day (Ukraine)

Military Chaplain Day is observed in Ukraine every October 25, honoring military chaplains serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This unofficial professional holiday recognizes the spiritual guidance and support provided by chaplains to military personnel, their families, and civilian staff. The tradition of military chaplaincy in Ukraine dates back to the baptism of Kyivan Rus’ in the late 10th century, but it gained prominence during the Russo-Ukrainian War, beginning in 2014, when Catholic priests volunteered to boost morale in combat units. The establishment of formal military chaplain positions occurred in 2016, and a significant milestone was reached with the adoption of the Law on the Military Chaplaincy Service in 2021, which came into effect in 2022. On October 25, 2022, the first mandates for military chaplains were issued, symbolically linked to the feast day of Martin of Tours, the patron saint of soldiers. Although the Orthodox Church of Ukraine has since changed its calendar, the celebration of Military Chaplain Day remains on October 25 to commemorate this important development.
