Cyrus the Great Day, also known as Cyrus Day, is observed worldwide, particularly in Iran and among Iranian communities in countries like the UK and the United States, every October 26. This observance honors Cyrus II, the founder of the Achaemenid Empire, and commemorates his entrance into Babylon in October 539 BC, an event documented in the Nabonidus Chronicle. Participants typically visit his tomb in Pasargadae, an archaeological site in Fars Province, to pay their respects. The holiday was initiated by the Save Pasargadae Institute, although it does not have official status. In 2016, a significant demonstration took place in Pasargadae, where thousands of young people expressed their admiration for Cyrus by chanting, “Cyrus is our father, Iran is our country,” while also critiquing the Iranian government. The observance reflects a blend of cultural pride and historical significance associated with Cyrus the Great.
