Ukrainian Writing and Language Day is observed in Ukraine every October 27. Established by President Leonid Kuchma in 1997, the holiday originally took place on November 9 to honor Saint Nestor the Chronicler, a monk from Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and author of the Primary Chronicle. In 2023, the date was changed to October 27 following a revision by the Orthodox Church of Ukraine to the Julian calendar, aligning the feast day of Saint Nestor with the new date. The holiday aims to recognize the significant role of the Ukrainian language in unifying society. Celebrations include a traditional flower laying ceremony at the monument to Nestor the Chronicler, alongside various cultural events promoting the use of the Ukrainian language. Additionally, the International Competition of the Ukrainian Language Experts begins on this day, attracting over 5 million participants from 20 countries worldwide.
