October 29: Serbian Constitutional Referendum Anniversary (Serbia)

The Serbian Constitutional Referendum Anniversary is observed in the Republic of Serbia every October 29. This unofficial observance commemorates the 2006 constitutional referendum that led to the adoption of the current Constitution of Serbia, following the country's declaration of sovereignty in June 2006. The National Assembly of Serbia approved the new constitution on September 30, 2006, which replaced the previous constitution from 1990. Key changes included the full independence of the National Bank of Serbia, the adoption of the Serbian language and Cyrillic alphabet as official, and enhanced protections for minorities, children, and mothers. The referendum took place on October 28 and 29, 2006, with over 3.6 million participants, of whom 90.60% voted in favor of the new constitution, which came into effect on November 8, 2006. Although not an official holiday, this day is recognized as a significant milestone in Serbia's history.
