World Stroke Day is observed worldwide every October 29 to highlight the serious nature and high rates of stroke, a condition that occurs when poor blood flow to the brain leads to cell death. Established following discussions at the 2004 World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada, the day was formalized when the World Stroke Federation and the International Stroke Society merged into the World Stroke Organization in 2006. Events and activities on this day focus on educating the public about the main risk factors for stroke, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and tobacco smoking, as well as the importance of knowing how to assist stroke survivors in their recovery. Each year, over 15 million people experience a stroke, with about 6 million fatalities and around 5 million survivors left with permanent disabilities.
