October 30: Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security

Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security is observed worldwide every October 30. This day aims to attract public attention to hunger in Africa and highlights the need to reduce poverty, eradicate food insecurity, and address severe undernutrition. The observance was established during the African Union Summit in Kampala, Uganda, in October 2010, following the Declaration on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program signed by African Union heads of state in 2003. Despite efforts, the situation regarding hunger and malnutrition has continued to be challenging, with only slight improvements noted in some countries by 2012. Each year, the African Union Summit selects a special theme for this day to focus on critical hunger issues, encouraging governments to strengthen their commitments to food and nutrition agendas. The ultimate goal is to end hunger in Africa by 2025, as declared during a significant meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2013.
