King Father's Birthday is observed in Cambodia every October 31 to commemorate the birthday anniversary of the late King Norodom Sihanouk, who was born on this date in 1922. Although it is not a public holiday since the ascension of his son, Norodom Sihamoni, to the throne, Cambodians remember their former king and honor his legacy on this day. Sihanouk's reign included periods as both king and prime minister, and he returned to the throne in 1993 after years of exile. He passed away on October 15, 2012, and prior to his death, King Father's Birthday was a public holiday. Following his passing, a new holiday was established to celebrate the current king's birthday on May 14, but the observance of King Father's Birthday continues as a memorial day for Sihanouk.
