eDay is observed in New Zealand every October 4, focusing on the recycling of old electronic devices. Initiated in 2006 by Computer Access New Zealand, the event began at a single location and has since expanded to multiple sites to facilitate the collection of electronic waste. Each year, millions of old devices are estimated to be disposed of in landfills rather than recycled, posing environmental and health risks due to harmful chemicals. The first eDay event collected around 119,000 pounds (54 tonnes) of non-biodegradable electronic materials, such as computers and cell phones. The initiative aims to address the issue of electronic waste disposal and promote safe recycling practices among New Zealanders.
