Armed Forces Day in Indonesia is observed every October 5 to commemorate the creation of the People's Security Army (Tentara Keamanan Rakjat) in 1945, which is the predecessor of the National Armed Forces. This day marks the establishment of the armed forces by Sukarno to defend Indonesia during the Indonesian National Revolution against Dutch attempts to re-establish colonial rule following the country's declaration of independence. The Indonesian National Armed Forces, known as Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) since 1947, consists of the Army, Navy (including the Marine Corps), and Air Force, with approximately 434,000 active personnel as of 2014. Celebrations include impressive military displays, formal receptions, and various events throughout the country, although it is not a public holiday, meaning employees do not receive an extra day off.
