October 8: Battle of Angamos Remembrance (Chile)

The Battle of Angamos, also known as "Combate naval de Angamos," is observed on October 8 and commemorates a significant naval engagement during the War of the Pacific between Chile and Peru. The battle occurred at Punta Angamos, where the Chilean navy, led by Captain Juan José Latorre and Commodore Galvarino Riveros, captured the Peruvian ironclad 'Huáscar,' commanded by Rear Admiral Miguel Grau Seminario, who was killed in action. This decisive victory for the Chilean navy marked the end of a five-month naval campaign aimed at defeating the Peruvian fleet. Following the battle, the 'Huáscar' was repaired and served under the Chilean flag until decommissioned, and it is now a floating museum in Talcahuano's port. The battle solidified Chile's naval dominance in the Pacific, facilitating subsequent land campaigns that contributed to the fall of Lima.
