The Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repressions is observed in Russia on October 30 every year. This official day of remembrance was established in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and commemorates the first observation of Political Prisoners Day in 1974, when prisoners in the Mordovia and Perm labor camps organized a hunger strike and lit candles to honor the victims of political repression. Annually, various mourning events take place, including ceremonies for laying wreaths and flowers at monuments dedicated to the victims, as well as special classes in schools. Since 1987, activists have supported political prisoners through mass demonstrations. Other post-Soviet countries, such as Ukraine and Kazakhstan, also observe similar days of remembrance, albeit on different dates.
