International Day of the Nacho is celebrated every October 21 in the USA and Mexico. This day commemorates the popular snack, nachos, which originated in Piedras Negras, Mexico, in 1943. The creation of nachos is attributed to Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya, who prepared the dish for a group of army soldiers' wives when restaurants were closed. He sliced tortillas into triangles, topped them with shredded cheddar and jalapeños, and served them as “Nacho's especiales.” The name was later shortened to “nachos.” In honor of Anaya, who passed away in 1975, a bronze plaque was erected in Piedras Negras, and an annual nacho competition is held during the celebration, with Anaya's son serving as a judge until his death in 2010.
